The Clean

This band is either criminally unknown and under appreciated, or perfectly protected from the irony dripping slags that have taken over hip culture these days. I'm not quite sure yet, but I'm hoping for the latter. The group started in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1978 and is still alive and kicking today, with only a few dips in quality in the late 80's. You can hear their strummy, experimental pop influence in bands like Pavement, MGMT, Yo La Tengo, and Guided by Voices . If I've piqued your interest in them The Clean Anthology would be a good place to start as it collects a lot of hard to find singles and EP's. The Boodle Boodle Boodle EP is also a real whiz-banger.

And Sonic Boom.

MGMT- Siberian Breaks

My feelings on this band are usually bi-polar, but this often overlooked epic song (from the album Congratulations,) solidifies my liking each time I hear it. This band really blossomed with Sonic Boom(Pete Kember, of Spacemen 3, who you should also check out!) adding his talents as producer.
